Data from the Federal Highway Administration reveals that the typical American driver covers approximately 14,000 to 15,000 miles annually. Based on this information, most tires last between three and five years or around 60,000 miles. However, your driving style, road conditions, and tire maintenance have a significant impact on how long your car’s tires will last. Maximize your tire life with these helpful tips from your Porsche Center.

Maximizing Tire Life: Tire Maintenance Tips for Your Porsche From Your Porsche Center

Monitor Your Tire Pressure

Your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) will warn you when your tire pressure is too low. However, don’t wait for the warning. Instead, check your tire pressure monthly and maintain the correct PSI.

This will help to avoid underinflation, which causes excessive outside tread wear and handling problems. On the other hand, overinflating your tires will accelerate wear on the inside of the tread. The correct tire pressure is on a sticker inside your driver’s or fuel door and in your owner’s manual.

Avoid Rapid Acceleration and Hard Braking

To avoid premature wear, maintain a following distance of three seconds to give yourself enough space to avoid hard braking. By being more cautious while accelerating and braking, you will extend the lifespan of your car’s tires.

Avoid Obstacles on the Road

Always avoid obstacles on the road while driving. Stay focused on the road to prevent running over glass, metal, rocks, or potholes that will damage your tires. If it’s unsafe to change lanes to avoid an obstacle entirely, slow down to prevent braking when you hit to minimize the damage.

Get Regular Tire Rotations

Tire rotation involves repositioning the tires to achieve uniform wear, which prolongs their lifespan. Your Porsche’s front and rear tires have different functions, causing them to wear unevenly. To maintain even tread wear across all your tires, rotate them every 5,000 miles or when you take your Porsche for a service.

Have Your Wheels Balanced

When you have your tires rotated, also have the wheels balanced. Your Porsche technician will use a specialized balancing machine and add small weights to minimize vibrations and ensure even tread wear. This will ensure even tire tread wear, improve your Porsche’s handling and performance, and make your tires last longer.

Check the Wheel Alignment Yearly

If your Porsche is pulling to the side, you notice wear on the outside or inside of a tire, or if you’ve recently hit a curb or pothole, ask your Porsche technician to check your car’s wheel alignment. Adjusting the suspension to correct the wheel’s tilt once or twice yearly will improve fuel efficiency and prolong tire life.
