Modern Porsche vehicles are a combination of sophisticated mechanical and electrical parts working in unison. So if you run into electrical problems, your car’s entire performance is quite likely to falter. Electrical issues are most often caused by one of the following three common causes. If you’re in doubt, visit your local Porsche dealer for a professional inspection.

Faulty Alternator

Without a fully-functioning alternator, none of the electrical components of your car will work for long. The alternator transforms the mechanical force produced by your engine into electrical power. It then recharges your battery and powers your onboard computer, dashboard instruments, power steering, windshield wipers, air conditioning, and more. Above all, the alternator generates the power that keeps the spark plugs firing and your superior boxer engine running.

The alternator in a Porsche will usually last six to ten years. When an alternator begins to fail, your battery will stop charging, sometimes making it difficult to start your car. Also, many of your electrical accessories will have problems all at once.

Is Your Alternator or Battery Malfunctioning?

When the engine isn’t on and powering the alternator, electrical power comes from your battery. If you can’t start your car one morning, you might be unsure whether the failure is due to a battery that needs replacing or a dying alternator failing to power the battery.

To figure out the culprit, jump-start your car and take away the battery cables. At this point, with the engine turned on, a healthy alternator should power up the battery and keep the spark plugs in the engine’s cylinders firing. But if the alternator isn’t functioning, then the engine will die again shortly after your jump start.

Blown Fuses

If only one of your electrical accessories has stopped working, it might have blown a fuse. You can open your car’s fuse box and remove the relevant fuse to see if the element inside is burned out, which should be quite clear to see. You can also use a multimeter or test light to check fuses without removing them. Both of these tools are easy to purchase at most auto parts shops.

Burned-out fuses can be replaced to solve some problems. But if the fuse blows again, or more than one fuse blows, then you might have a larger underlying issue with your electrical system. You’ll probably need to have a professional take a look.

Loose Wiring

Your Porsche is packed with wiring and circuits, most of which aren’t readily visible. Sometimes these wires can come loose or connections can detach.

Locating a wiring fault is a painstaking process that involves mapping out the circuits of your Porsche and inspecting the full length of the wiring. Most drivers find it simpler to have a technician find and fix it for them.
